Among the various “labeled” diets that are recognized by health-oriented individuals, dieticians, and medical practitioners, the Western Diet seems to be the least beneficial for Elderly and Senior individuals in the long term. The Western Diet consists of fried food, processed food, red meat, high-fat dairy products, sweetened desserts, alcohol, etc. A study conducted by Tasnime Akbaraly, PhD, of INSERM in Montpellier, France found that participants who ate foods in the Western Diet were about 50% less likely to age ideally, with a 53% greater chance of cardiovascular death, poorer musculoskeletal health, and worse cognitive function. A diet with high intake of vegetables, fruits, and fish was significantly associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular death.
Ideal aging is achieving older ages with high physical and cognitive function, free of chronic illness. Good nutrition can help Elderly individuals get there and still has tremendous health benefits for Elders with chronic illness, especially in the case of Diabetes, where individuals must maintain a healthy diet to maintain blood sugar and blood pressure levels.
